Soco a Go-Go
June 25, 2010

Artworks' month-long Southeastern Massachusetts event, "To Tell a Story," continued onward last night with bicoastal filmmakers Adam P. Cray and Tommy Whalen.

Writer/Director Cray screened his short film "Last Seen," a psychological thrill ride that races through an abandoned New Bedford mill. Originally debuting last year at the "Building Bridges to the Homeland" film festival in the Whaling City's Zeiterion Theatre, the smaller Artworks venue offered a more intimate vibe, enabling viewers to ask questions about the film and discuss opinions onthe future of the industry.

Adam Cray also revealed his plan to turn the short into a feature film within the next year. "I'd like to start filming next spring," he explained, "and I'm hoping to have the whole thing finished in about eight months."

Following Cray's presentation was Writer/Producer Tommy Whalen, who showcased a scene from the upcoming film directed by Arielle Guadagni, "Busted Balls." Since both Whalen and Guadagni were Los Angeles-based at the time of filming, he went on to explain why they chose his home state of Massachusetts as their base of operations. Many factors pulled them toward the New Bedford area, he said, including ease of securing locations, appropriate winter weather, and the overall Soco film movement that seems to have swept the area over the past year.

Next week, Rab Studios takes the stage, along with local filmmaker Preston Alexander. Be a part of the action every Thursday at 7p, at:
Artworks! 384 Acushnet Avenue, New Bedford, MA 02740.
